Job Announcement: Code Enforcement Officer / Building Inspector

The Town of Poestenkill, New York, is seeking a qualified and motivated individual to serve as our Code Enforcement Officer (CEO) / Building Inspector. This combined role is responsible for administering and enforcing the New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code, the NYS Property Maintenance Code, the Energy Conservation Construction Code, and the Town of Poestenkill local codes. The position plays a critical role in protecting public safety while supporting responsible development and construction in our community of approximately 4,300 residents.

Position Overview

The Code Enforcement Officer / Building Inspector conducts thorough on-site inspections of new construction, renovations, repairs, additions, and existing buildings. The role also includes reviewing permit applications, issuing building permits, documenting findings, investigating complaints, and enforcing compliance through violation notices and stop-work orders when necessary. This position combines technical inspection duties with broader legal enforcement authority.

Key Responsibilities‍ ‍

Perform inspections for structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, fire safety, and energy code compliance on new and existing structures.

Verify third-party electrical and other specialized inspections.

Review construction plans and applications for compliance with applicable codes and issue or deny building permits.

Investigate zoning and code complaints and maintain accurate records of inspections, violations, and enforcement actions.

Issue stop-work orders and other enforcement remedies as authorized under the NYS Uniform Code.

Collaborate with the Town Supervisor, Planning Board, Zoning Board, and other departments to ensure consistent code administration.

Maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes in state and local codes and provide technical guidance to contractors, property owners, and the public.

Prepare reports and maintain department records as required.

Qualifications‍ ‍

High school diploma or equivalent required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in construction technology, civil engineering, architecture, or a related field is preferred.

Must be currently certified (or able to obtain certification within the required timeframe) as a Code Enforcement Official by the New York State Department of State, Division of Building Standards and Codes (completion of all six basic training courses: 9A–9F).

Previous experience in building inspection, construction, code enforcement, or a related field is highly desirable.

Strong knowledge of the NYS Uniform Code, building construction practices, and local zoning regulations.

Excellent communication, customer service, and organizational skills.

Ability to work independently in the field, prepare clear written reports, and interpret technical documents.

Valid New York State driver’s license and reliable transportation required.

Must maintain active certification through annual in-service training requirements (24 hours per year for Code Enforcement Officials).

Compensation & Benefits

Competitive salary commensurate with experience and qualifications. The position is eligible to participate in the New York State Retirement System. Paid time off is provided.

Sand Lake Beach Facility Passes Now Available for Poestenkill Residents

The Town of Poestenkill is pleased to announce that residents can now purchase annual passes for the Town of Sand Lake Beach Facility on Reichards

Lake.

Details: - Cost: $75 per household per year.

Where to purchase: Poestenkill Town Clerk’s Office

These passes provide Poestenkill households with access to the beach facilities for the 2026 season.

For more information or to obtain your pass, please contact the Town Clerk during regular business hours.

We hope many Poestenkill families will take advantage of this opportunity to enjoy the lake this summer!

Water District #2 Plans Now Available for Public Viewing

Detailed plans for Water District #2 (including maps, proposed layouts, and related documents) are available for in-person review at Poestenkill Town Hall.
Office Hours: (Call ahead to confirm, as hours vary by department)

  • Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM

  • Thursday: 4:00 PM – 7:00 PM

  • Saturday: 8:00 AM – 12:00 PM (limited services)

Residential Garbage & Recycling Drop-Off

Poestenkill residents can bring household garbage and recyclables to the Waste Management Transfer Station.

Location: 9002 NY-66 (Route 66), Averill Park, NY 12018 (near Routes 66 & 351)

Accepted items: Regular household trash and recyclables (check facility for specifics like paper, containers, etc.).
Fees: Typically $3 per bag for garbage; recycling is often free or low-cost (payment by personal check or credit card—no cash accepted).
Requirements: Proof of Poestenkill residency may be required—bring ID or vehicle registration.

Sand Lake Convenience Facility Permits Now Available for Poestenkill Residents

The Town of Poestenkill is pleased to share that residents can now obtain annual permits for the Town of Sand Lake Convenience Facility (transfer station) located at 213 Chamberlin Hill Road, West Sand Lake.

Permit Details: - Cost: $60.00 per year (per the current arrangement for Poestenkill households) - Where to purchase: Available through the Poestenkill Town Clerk’s Office

These permits grant access to the facility for waste disposal and recycling services, subject to all Sand Lake Convenience Facility rules and regulations

(including vehicle permitting, accepted materials, and proof of residency requirements where applicable).

Now Hiring: Town Historian

Town of Poestenkill official public historian responsible for preserving and interpreting the town's history in an accurate, objective, and unbiased manner for all residents. Must live in Poestenkill.

Core Duties

  1. Research & Writing – Study town history and write scholarly and public-facing materials.

  2. Education & Outreach – Support local schools (esp. grades 4–7), speak to groups, and assist individuals researching the past.

  3. Preservation – Protect historical records, photos, maps, documents, artifacts, and buildings; recommend proper storage locations.

  4. Community Involvement – Participate in civic/patriotic events and advocate for history-related initiatives.

Key Limits

  • Provides equal, non-partisan service to all citizens.

  • Not affiliated with private historical societies (no officer roles).

  • Remains objective and unbiased, never partisan.

Volunteer/appointed public service role focused on accuracy, preservation, and community engagement.

Disposing of Leftover Paint – Use PaintCare for Safe Recycling

Poestenkill residents can recycle unwanted household paint, stains, sealers, varnishes, and similar products through New York State's PaintCare program (free drop-off at participating sites).

Accepted items include:

  • Interior/exterior architectural paints (latex, acrylic, water-based, oil-based/alkyd, enamel)

  • Primers, sealers, undercoaters

  • Stains, deck coatings, floor paints

  • Shellacs, lacquers, varnishes, urethanes (single-component)

  • Waterproofing sealers (non-tar/bitumen), rust preventatives, metal coatings

Requirements:

  • Original containers only (no larger than 5 gallons)

  • Secure lids, no leaks

  • Original manufacturer label intact

  • Not empty or mixed paints

Not accepted: Aerosols, paint thinners/solvents, auto/marine paints, art/craft paints, epoxies/glues, industrial coatings, 2-part paints, or hazardous additives.
